The Your Vision for the Haven report (July 2024) presents findings from a three-month participatory research project led by University of the Highlands and Islands Inverness and the Elsie Normington Foundation to inform planning at the Haven Centre, Inverness. The research employed the Community Assessment and Action methodology developed by Professor Vicky Johnson and Dr. Robert Nurick emphasising stakeholder-led research, participatory tools, coding systems, and collaborative action planning. Fifty-one stakeholders—young people with learning disabilities, parents/carers, and service providers—shared experiences of disability services and priorities for improvement. Six key challenges were identified: disconnected services and lack of joined-up working; limited information and transparency; shortages of suitably trained carers and long waiting lists; limited respite and crisis support; transport barriers (especially outside Inverness); and insufficient support for transitions to adulthood. Priorities arising from the research include providing designated support/advocacy workers, improving service coordination and information access, strengthening carer training, enhancing transport solutions, expanding respite, and creating volunteering, work experience, and life-skills opportunities for young people.
