Chewing Qat: Impacts on Somali Families and Communities

This community-led research by the Somali Community Action Team (SCAT) explores how Qat use affects families and communities in Lewisham. Supported by local partners and the Lewisham Borough Council, the project trained Somali residents to research the social, health, and cultural impacts of Qat. The study reveals that Qat use contributes to family tension, financial strain, and health issues, while also being deeply rooted in culture and social life. SCAT calls for awareness-raising, community-based support, youth engagement, and alternatives to Qat chewing to strengthen wellbeing and unity.
